Soil and Solid Analyses

In 1976, Congress enacted the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). It provides guidance for the management of solid waste, and underground storage tanks that contain fuel or hazardous chemicals. RCRA's primary goals are to:

  • Protect human health and the environment from the potential hazards of waste disposal
  • To conserve energy and natural resources
  • To reduce the amount of waste generated
  • To ensure that wastes are managed in an environmentally sound manner

Acceptance or treatment of solid waste depends upon its hazardous categorization. A waste may be considered hazardous if it is ignitable, corrosive, reactive, or contains a certain level of toxicity. There is also a list of over 500 EPA defined and regulated hazardous wastes.

RCRA compliant analyses Advanced Technology Laboratories performs include:

  • Ignitability (EPA 1010)
  • Corrosivity (EPA 9045C)
  • Reactivity (SW 846 Chapter 7)
  • Toxicity (TCLP and WET)
  • Heavy Metals (EPA 6010B/ 7000A)
  • Organochlorine Pesticides (EPA 8081A)
  • Semivolatile Organics (EPA 8270C)
  • Volatile Organics (EPA 8260B)
  • Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (Federal requirement)
  • Waste Extraction Test (State of California requirement)
