Hazardous Waste Characterization

According to EPA 40 CFR 261.20, a solid waste that is not excluded from regulation is considered a hazardous waste if it exhibits any of the following characteristics:

Acceptance of hazardous waste at disposal facilities is governed by compliance with either State or Federal criteria. Acceptance usually depends upon the disposal facility and the source of the waste. Additional analyses performed to determine the presence of regulated contaminants include:

  • Heavy Metals (EPA 6010B/7000A)
  • Organochlorine Pesticides (EPA 8081A)
  • Semivolatile Organics (EPA 8270C)
  • Volatile Organics (EPA 8260B)
  • Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (Federal requirement)
  • Waste Extraction Test (State of California requirement)
